A federal grand jury in Sacramento has indicted two men in separate cases for being felons in possession of a firearm or ammunition.
Anthony William Hunt has been charged with possessing a firearm after having been convicted of a felony drug offense, according to a federal Department of Justice news release.
Officials said Sacramento police officers responded to a domestic violence call Christmas Day. A woman told officers that she had been physically assaulted. Police seized a 9mm semiautomatic handgun loaded with hollow point rounds that was found between mattresses where Hunt and his 2-year-old daughter slept. Officers reported that the gun was not locked in a container or made safe in any manner, posing a risk of injury to the child.
According to Sacramento County Superior Court records, Hunt pleaded no contest to possession of marijuana for sale in October 2008.
In the second case, Heber Naman Vasquez, 25, was indicted today for possessing ammunition after having been convicted of a felony offense. On Dec. 31, Vasquez is alleged to have purchased 50 rounds of Winchester .380-caliber ammunition from Sports Authority in Sacramento. He has a 2006 felony conviction for willful discharge of firearm in a negligent manner and was charged in that case with a gang enhancement, according to the news release.
The cases are the result of investigations by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive task force.
