4-year-old cyclist dies after being struck by truck

A 4-year-old boy died after being hit by a truck Tuesday evening while riding his bicycle on a residential street in Sacramento's Arden Arcade neighborhood.

The accident occurred on Cava Court at Carro Drive, said a spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as Edward Luckett of Sacramento.

About 5:48 p.m., the driver of a blue Dodge Dakota northbound on Carro Drive turned onto Cava Court at an unknown rate of speed, said Lizz Dutton, CHP spokeswoman.

As the truck entered the court, the boy came out of a driveway into the roadway on his bicycle and was struck, Dutton said. He was not wearing a helmet, Dutton said. He was transported to UC Davis Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 6:48 p.m., she said.

Investigators learned that the boy's mother had just dropped him off at his aunt's house on Cava Court, and that the aunt had just gone into the house when the accident happened, Dutton said.

The 27-year-old driver had been drinking, but was not above the legal blood alcohol content limit, Dutton said. He was given a field sobriety test and a preliminary alcohol screening at the scene. He was not arrested.

Investigators will look into speed being a factor in the collision and determine if charges will be filed, Dutton said.
