A man who Auburn police say was on Placer County's "20 most wanted" list has been arrested in connection with a collision between a quad runner and a Union Pacific train.
About noon Jan. 22, police were dispatched to the area of a train trestle over Interstate 80 regarding a report that a train had hit a person riding a quad runner, according to an Auburn Police Department news release. The quad rider left the area before police arrived and was not located.
Union Pacific Railroad police conducted an investigation and determined that the vehicle had been stolen out of Nevada County.
On Jan. 27, Auburn police received an anonymous tip that the person riding the quad runner was Daniel Lopez, 32. Police said Lopez was one of Placer County law enforcement's 20 most wanted individuals because he had a $50,000 warrant for auto theft.
Auburn patrol officers and detectives made numerous attempts to locate Lopez by calling and contacting Lopez's family and friends. Lopez finally turned himself in and was arrested Friday.
Officials said Lopez admitted to a police detective that he was riding the quad runner when it was hit by the train, and said he ran away because he knew he was wanted. Police said Lopez told officers that he did not know the quad runner was stolen.
Lopez was booked into Placer County Jail on the warrant and remains in custody with bail set at $30,000. Auburn police said they continue to work with Union Pacific Railroad police regarding the train collision and the stolen quad runner.
