The California Highway Patrol reports that a drugged driver may have been the cause of a collision on Highway 99 this afternoon in which one person was injured and a California Highway Patrol vehicle was damaged.
CHP spokesman Officer Michael Bradley said a CHP officer had made a traffic stop on northbound Highway 99, just south of Florin Road, and was in the process of towing a motorcycle from the roadway shoulder at 12:20 p.m. A Toyota pickup truck driven by a 46-year-old Livermore resident was traveling on the shoulder and came upon the stopped CHP vehicle. In an effort to avoid the collision, the truck driver swerved into the traffic lanes and collided with an ADT Security van.
The collision caused the driver of the van to lose control of his vehicle. The van began to roll over as it collided with the driver's side of the CHP patrol vehicle. Bradley said the van also hit the motorcycle, which was parked in front of the patrol vehicle.
The driver of the van suffered minor injuries and was transported to Kaiser South Sacramento Medical Center for treatment.
The motorcycle rider was in the right rear passenger seat of the patrol vehicle at the time of the collision and the CHP officer was standing on the roadway shoulder. Neither was injured.
Officers investigating the collision reported that the driver of the pickup showed symptoms of being under the influence of drugs or medication. The pickup driver was taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment of a possible drug overdose and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
