A Woodland police sergeant was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of driving under the influence, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Woodland police Sgt. Steve Sexton was pulled over and arrested at 4:32 p.m. Monday while riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle at Maxwell Avenue and County Road 102 in east Woodland, said CHP Sgt. Andy Hill.
Shortly before, at a different location, a citizen had seen a motorcycle rider come to a stop and lose control of the motorcycle, Hill said. The citizen stopped to help pick up the bike and smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the rider, Hill said.
The citizen called police and followed the motorcycle as it drove away, Hill said. CHP officers, who were notified to be on the lookout for a possible drunken driver on a motorcycle, spotted the motorcycle and made the stop on Maxwell Avenue, Hill said.
An investigation determined that the driver, Sexton, was under the influence of alcohol, Hill said.
Sexton, who was not on duty, was arrested, cited and released, Hill said.
Sexton is a 25-year veteran of the Woodland Police Department, said police spokesman Lt. Anthony Cucchi. He has been placed on administrative leave, said Cucchi, who said he could not comment further because the situation is a personnel matter.
