Reward offered for Eppie's plaque stolen from parkway

Is nothing sacred?

Sacramento County park rangers are accustomed to dealing with thieves breaking into cars, poachers and other miscreants plying their trade along the American River Parkway.

But a theft last weekend may mark a new low: someone pried a large commemorative plaque off a boulder in the William B. Pond Recreation Area that marked the starting point for the annual Eppie's Great Race.

The plaque, which had been in place since the triathlon's 30th anniversary on July 9, 2003, apparently was removed last Saturday. The Eppie's Great Race foundation is offering a $250 reward for its return, no questions asked.
