Two people have been convicted of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Sacramento's Wood Park 11 years ago, thanks to DNA evidence.
Alonzo Hamilton and Hollie Garrett, both now 28, are scheduled to be sentenced April 29, according to Jan Scully, Sacramento County district attorney.
A news release from Scully gives this chain of events:
The case remained unsolved until 2008 when Sacramento Police Department detectives suspected Hamilton had committed a series of robberies. DNA from the robberies was analyzed by the district attorney's crime lab and sent to the State Department of Justice, where a match was made to DNA found in the 2000 sexual assault.
The Sacramento Police Department's cold case unit reopened the sexual assault case.
Additional DNA profiles were developed from evidence in the 2000 sexual assault and a match was made to Garrett in 2010.
In October, Hamilton was also convicted of multiple counts of robbery and sentenced to
24 years in prison.
