A manhunt in Carmichael Wednesday eventually ended with Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies arresting a convicted felon.
It took two searches of a Carmichael neighborhood, but deputies eventually arrested 18-year-old Shakeel Ali-Mapp. He was booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person and resisting an officer.
The determined police work, aided by citizen involvement, began at 11:45 a.m. when Sacramento County probation officers went to the 3300 block of Mensch Court near Garfield and Whitney avenues to check up on his residence. While in the home, officers saw a firearm in plain view.
He fled the home with officers in pursuit, escaping through backyards, deputies said. For two hours, deputies, probation staff and police dogs searched the neighborhood but couldn't find Ali-Mapp. Children were kept inside and doors were locked at a local school as a precaution.
The school eventually returned to normal and patrol units cleared from the area. However, shortly before 4 p.m. the sheriff's dispatch center received a call from resident saying that a man matching Ali-Mapp's description was walking near the 5300 block of Robertson Avenue, which is a short distance from the convicted felon's home. The caller said he knew that deputies had been out earlier looking for the suspect.
Deputies and police dogs quickly returned to the area. At 4:13 p.m., with the help of neighborhood residents, deputies found Ali-Mapp in the back yard of a home in the 3000 block of Merrimac Street. He was taken into custody without incident.
