A 26-year-old San Jose man has been convicted of assaulting a UC Davis student in 2010 with the intent to commit rape, the Yolo County District Attorney's Office reported Tuesday.
Hoang Cong Nguyen was convicted by a jury Monday in the May 6, 2010, assault on the 18-year-old student, according to a DA's office news release.
The release states that Nguyen had dated the victim's older sister for several years prior to the assault and remained friends with the older sister after their relationship ended in fall 2009. At that time, the victim and her sister moved to Davis to attend classes at UC Davis.
On May 6, 2010, Nguyen drove to Davis to visit the older sister and purchased a 200,000-volt stun gun in San Francisco on the way, according to the release.
The release gives this account of events:
The following day, while alone in a Davis apartment with the victim, he came up behind her and shot her with the stun gun several times in an attempt to incapacitate her.
The victim fought back by grabbing a kitchen knife that had been left on a nearby table and stabbing Nguyen three times in the leg, but Nguyen continued the assault, according to the release. The victim then pretended to pass out and saw Nguyen start removing his clothing.
Nguyen realized the victim was still conscious and resumed the assault, but the victim was able to escape the apartment. She went to the apartment manager's office and notified Davis police.
The victim had to be treated for electrical burns and abrasions on her upper body, as well as an incision made by the stun gun to her chest.
On Monday, a jury convicted Nguyen of assault with the intent to commit rape while committing burglary, residential burglary, attempted rape, false imprisonment and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Nguyen is scheduled to be sentenced on June 22 and faces a sentence of life in prison.
