Sacramento police now believe a stabbing outside a medical marijuana dispensary this morning may have been gang-related, said Sgt. Norm Leong, police spokesman.

Rival groups may have run into each other in the dispensary and then got into a fight outside.

Police said several people were stabbed, one fatally, outside a medicinal marijuana dispensary on Quinta Court near Stockton Boulevard in south Sacramento at about 11:45 a.m. today.

A suspect is in custody, police said.

One victim died at a hospital. At least two other people were driven to a hospital with wounds. There was no word on their conditions.

Police gave this account of events:

Two groups outside the R&R Wellness medicinal marijuana dispensary got into a dispute in the parking lot outside the dispensary.

A member of one group stabbed several people in the second group. He then fled.

The suspect was caught near Fruitridge Road and 24th Street, police said. He was not identified.

One member of one of the groups had just come out of the dispensary when the stabbing occurred, but police did not say if that was a factor in the dispute.

The dispensary was having a two-for-one sale and there was a large crowd outside, police said.

No other details were released.
