Sacramento County Sheriff's detectives arrested today the sixth and final suspect in the south Sacramento barbershop shootout that left two people dead last December, according to a sheriff's department news release.
Larry Dean Jones, Jr., 29, was taken into custody today at about 1:30 p.m. without incident, in Sacramento County, according to the release. (Photo at left is a jail booking from a prior arrest of Jones.)
Detectives from the Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau and Gang Suppression Unit arrested Jones without incident at a residence in the county, the release states.
Jones was wanted in connection with the Dec. 14 shootout in the parking lot of the Fly Cuts Barber Shop in the 6900 block of Stockton Boulevard. The gunfire killed two people -- Monique Nelson, 30, who detectives believe was shot while trying to protect her 2-year-old son, and Marvion Barksdale, 20, one of the suspected gunmen.
Detectives say the shootout - in which dozens of shots were fired inside and in front of the barbershop - was born of bad blood between the Mitchell brothers and the Barksdale clan. Tensions had escalated weeks before the shooting when Lonnie Mitchell allegedly robbed a Barksdale cousin, authorities say.
Jones was believed to have fled to Washington state after the shootout, but later returned to Sacramento county. Earlier this month, a segment of the TV show "America's Most Wanted" focused on law enforcement's search for Jones.
Jones will be interviewed by homicide detectives and transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he will be booked on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, and held without bail, the release states.
Already facing multiple charges, including murder and assault with a deadly weapon, are: 27-year-old Dominique Marcell Lott, who was among the injured; Lonnie Orlando Mitchell Jr., 24; his brother Louis James Mitchell, 19; Charles Edward Barksdale III, 30, cousin of Marvion Barksdale; and James Leo Carney III, 31.
