David Corado's place of birth could accurately read: bus stop, Pioneer Trail at Aspenwald Street, South Lake Tahoe.
That's where he was born early Wednesday morning as his parents waited for a cab. He was born without a doctor's assistance, but with the help of South Lake Tahoe police dispatchers.
David's mother, Maria Ortiz-Corado, about nine months pregnant, with 10 days until her baby boy was expected to be born, was enjoying a quiet evening at home late Tuesday. Then she went into labor. (Photo at left of mother and baby is courtesy of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.)
Her husband, Jonatan Corado, called a taxi to take the couple to Barton Memorial Hospital for the delivery. As they waited for a cab to arrive at the bus stop, about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, the birth rapidly progressed.
South Lake Tahoe police said they got a call at 12:38 a.m. Dispatchers Jill Broadfoot and Linda Clark began coaching the caller through the birthing process while sending Fire Department medics and police officers to the bus stop.
Officers Angie Kallstrom, Chris Webber and Sgt. Brad Williams responded, Webber arriving just as David was born. Kallstrom and Williams provided comfort until medics arrived.
David Corado, 6 pounds, 3 ounces, was cold, but otherwise healthy.
