Sacramento police announced Tuesday the arrest of a 28-year-old man in connection with a robbery that occurred at a church in Sacramento's Southside Park neighborhood on Good Friday.
The robbery occurred in the early morning hours of April 22 at the Our Lady of Guadalupe church in the 700 block of T Street.
The victim, who had arrived at church for the early service and was carrying $2,000 to give to a friend who needed to buy a car, was robbed at gunpoint as he exited a church restroom, The Bee reported.
On April 27, at 1:36 a.m., a Sacramento police officer stopped a suspicious subject in the area of 28th and C streets after responding to an activated alarm in the area, according to a Sacramento Police Department news release.
The suspect attempted to assault the officer and then fled, according to the release. Two citizens and an additional officer joined the chase and caught the suspect, who fought them before being taken into custody, the release states.
Officers located a large amount of cash and a gun. An ensuing investigation led to the suspect being arrested on suspicion of attempting to assault an officer and of the robbery at the church, according to the release.
William Castro, 28, was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on April 27, online booking logs show. He remains ineligible for bail.
On the morning of the April 22 robbery, an anonymous benefactor, who had heard about the robbery on the news, showed up at the church with $2,000 and donated it to the victim.
