Two Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies fatally shot a man in south Sacramento shortly after midnight this morning.
The deputies opened fire after the man pointed a handgun at them, according to the Sheriff's Department.
The deputies arrived on Pomegranate Avenue near Delta Pointe Way after dispatchers received several reports of an armed man in the area.
A man who matched the description given to dispatchers was walking down the middle of the street when the deputies arrived. He was carrying a handgun. When the deputies addressed the man, he pointed the weapon at them. The deputies fired multiple times.
The man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died. He was in his 20s, according to the Sheriff's Department.
Law enforcement officials are interviewing a man and a woman in connection with the incident. These two people might have had some kind of altercation with the gunman and that the gunman might have assaulted the woman earlier in the night, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman Deputy Jason Ramos.
The Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division will conduct an investigation into the incident in accordance with Sheriff's Department policies for shootings involving deputies. Both deputies will be put on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
