UC Davis police police have arrested a student as a suspect in two sexual assaults on the campus last night.
Robert Schaerges, 26, was booked into Yolo County Jail on suspicion of sexual battery, false imprisonment and assaulting a police officer.
Campus police said that two sexual assaults took place on a bicycle path near the ARC Pavilion about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. The attacker also assaulted a police officer before running off.
A search began that eventually ended with the arrest of Schaerges. He was arrested shortly after an automated alert via text messaging and cell phone calls was sent out by campus police at 11 p.m.
Police are also looking into other incidents on the University of California, Davis campus that may be connected to last night's sexual assaults. Police did not immediately state what incidents they were referring to in a press release.
However, earlier this month two sexual battery incidents were reported on campus:
-- At 8:30 p.m. May 6 police said a woman was raped in the men's restroom stall at Wellman Hall during the Whole Earth Festival. The victim kicked at the suspect and knocked him down before she escaped. The suspect fled.
-- At 8:58 p.m. May 7 a woman was the victim of sexual battery by a male juvenile while dancing in the "Techno Pit" at Wellman Hall during the Whole Earth Festival. The suspect groped the woman before being pulled away by her friend. The suspect fled.
