An early-morning shooting in Lodi wounded two men, one seriously.
Lodi police said the man most grievously hurt has lost sight in one eye and may be paralyzed.
The man was shot after arriving in his car at the scene of an assault on two other people, a man and a woman, at about 2 a.m. in an alley near the 500 block of East Pine Street. Those two were accosted by three men who asked them if they were gang members.
The pair did not respond and continued to walk down the alley when the man was shot in the back, police said.
The man driving the car, who police said was trying to give the other man and woman a ride, was making a U-turn when the gunman shot him through the driver's-side window from close range. His car then careened into a tree.
The driver probably has been paralyzed from the waist down and has lost sight in his left eye, police Corporal Dale Eubanks said.
The couple originally attacked escaped to a nearby porch and eventually were aided by police.
One man was taken into custody at a nearby home and arrested on attempted murder. The man suspected of doing the shooting and another suspect remain at large.
