A man was shot early this morning during a suspected robbery attempt in south Sacramento, the Sacramento Police Department reported.
Officers responded to the 4800 block of Tangerine Avenue near Mack Road at about 12:25 a.m., after a man called police from that location saying he had been shot, said police Sgt. Sherry Bell. A 29-year-old man was found at the location with a gunshot wound to the lower back, Bell said.
The victim told officers he had been walking on Tangerine Avenue when a car pulled up next to him with two black males in their late teens or early 20s, who began asking him for directions. The victim said he walked away from the car, at which point the two men got out, pointed guns at him and demanded he turn over his belongings, Bell said.
The victim refused and tried to run, at which point he was shot in the lower back, Bell said.
He climbed over a fence on Tangerine Avenue into a grassy area and called police, Bell said. Responding paramedics had to cut away part of the fence to reach the victim and transported him to a local hospital.
His injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening.
