Sacramento County Sheriff's detectives have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the 2007 slaying of 39-year-old John Pogacar near Rancho Cordova, the sheriff's department reported.
Kirk Jared Rivers, 22, left, walked into the sheriff's department Monday afternoon and handed a security officer a note in which he claimed responsibility for the killing of a man in 2007, said sheriff's department spokesman Deputy Jason Ramos.
Rivers was detained and interviewed by homicide detectives, who determined there was enough evidence to arrest Rivers in connection with Pogacar's death, according to a sheriff's department news release.
Pogacar was found dead of stab wounds to the upper body in his home in the 9400 block of Mira Del Rio Drive on the morning of May 30, 2007. An investigation into his death yielded no arrests and had gone cold, Ramos said.
While being interviewed by detectives Monday, Rivers gave information about Pogacar's death that had not been made public and showed "intimate knowledge that was consistent with the scene and the investigation," Ramos said.
Sheriff's detectives believe Rivers and Pogacar were strangers at the time of Pogacar's death, Ramos said.
Rivers was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail at 4:52 p.m. Monday, on suspicion of murder, online booking logs indicate. He is ineligible for bail and is scheduled to be arraigned this week.
