Toys for Sunday school kids were taken by thieves who broke into a church storage locker in West Sacramento.
The thieves took an inflatable bounce house and play balls purchased with the spare change donated by church members. The pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters were dutifully tossed into a wheelbarrow at church services each Sunday as the tune "Pennies from Heaven" played.
With more than $1,000 raised over several weeks, the church bought the bounce house and outdoor toys. The balls and hula hoops were used by toddlers to teens after their Sunday school lessons are over and while their parents are still in services at the Center for Spiritual Awareness, 1275 Starboard Drive, West Sacramento.
However, church members said they discovered Monday that a big storage locker where the play equipment was kept on church grounds had been broken into by burglars. Also taken was the church lawn equipment.
Church members are hoping that the toys will be returned.
"I wish the people who did this would have a moment of conscience and realize they don't need to steal from kids to make a quick buck," said the Rev. Georgia Prescott, the church's senior minister.
She said the church would accept any donations to recover from the loss.
