Crash on Highway 12 leaves one dead, traffic snarled

A fatal collision between a big rig and a car on Highway 12 in the delta this morning has snarled traffic.

The crash involving the big rig, which is overturned off the side of the road, and a Volkswagen automobile left a woman in the car dead. Traffic in both directions is backed up as the coroner responds and other emergency vehicles try to clear the scene.

The accident was reported about 5:30 a.m. on Highway 12 in San Joaquin County between Brannan Island and Tower Park Marina, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Rich Wetzel.

The Volkswagen was traveling eastbound when the car went into the westbound lanes and struck the oncoming truck.

The big rig driver and a passenger from the rig were transported to the hospital.
