A shooting outside a Watt Avenue motel Monday night left a 24-year-old man hospitalized and his car parked facing the wrong way on an Interstate 80 off-ramp, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department reported.
Authorities received reports of gunshots at the Economy Inn on Watt Avenue near I-80 around 9 p.m., with a possible victim involved, said sheriff's Lt. Scott Loggins. Shortly thereafter, a man called in from the area advising he had been shot, Loggins said.
Responding deputies found the victim had been shot once in the chest while sitting in his car in the motel parking lot, then drove away from the motel and down a nearby I-80 off-ramp, Loggins said. His car came to rest on the side of the off-ramp and witnesses attempted to administer medical aid until paramedics arrived.
The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was expected to survive, Loggins said.
Loggins said surveillance footage from the motel shows the victim engaged in a "transaction or conversation" with three males in the parking lot, then speeding away. He said the three suspects fled westbound on foot after the shooting and were still at large as of 11 p.m. Monday.
The off-ramp was closed for more than an hour while investigators processed the scene.
