Police arrested a man and a woman at Cottage Elementary School early Wednesday morning after the suspects were caught on surveillance cameras reportedly stealing copper.
John Wilson, 54, and Desiree Sanders, 27, of Sacramento allegedly sneaked onto the school property at 2221 Morse Ave. and were seen by surveyors at the San Juan Unified School District. Someone from the district called police at 2 a.m.
Police were on the scene within five minutes and arrested the two after police found them looking at wire piping. Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Jason Ramos said scraps of wire and wire cutters were in Sanders' possession.
"What usually happens is these people just crack or bust open the piping and strip the wire from inside," said Ramos, "presumably because it can be recycled for cash."
The suspects were charged with theft, conspiracy, and probation violation and are being held in the Sacramento County Jail.
