QUINCY - Gregory Wallin-Reed, 36, of Reno, pleaded not guilty Thursday to eight felony counts that include the shooting death of Rory McGuire, 20, of Susanville.
The murder case stems from a July 2 incident that began at Wallin-Reed's Janesville property, where he claimed McGuire and five other men were in the process of stealing his solar lights.
Wallin-Reed pursued their blue sedan, allegedly firing on its six occupants in a car chase that wound through the back roads between Janesville and Antelope Lake before the sedan crashed and overturned.
McGuire, the driver, died July 4 of gunshot wounds to the head. Two other occupants sustained gunshot wounds to their lower legs.
Wallin-Reed told Plumas County deputies the occupants of the car fired at him as they were fleeing.
Plumas County District Attorney David Hollister said Thursday he found "absolutely no evidence" of a firearm in McGuire's vehicle.
In addition to murder and the use of a fire arm in McGuire's death, Hollister charged Wallin-Reed with firing at an occupied vehicle, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of an illegal assault rifle.
Wallin-Reed, a former Army Ranger, is scheduled to return to Plumas County Superior Court Sept. 23 for pretrial conference and trial setting.
He is being held in the Plumas County jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.
