Jurors in the murder trial of Marco Antonio Topete have seen about half of a six-hour interrogation video this morning.
Prosecutors told the Yolo County Superior Court jury that the video would reveal Topete confessing to the killing of Yolo County Deputy Jose "Tony" Diaz. But as of lunchtime, the video had not revealed that.
Instead, it had shown Topete being responsive to some inquiries but uncommunicative about other lines of questioning by a sheriff's detective, a Yolo County parole agent and a Woodland police officer.
When asked if he knew why he was being held, Topete responded that it was because he had run from the law. But whenever the interrogators broached the topic of the shooting of Diaz, Topete would become silent.
The video also shows Topete coughing and scratching his legs. He had been found the hiding in brush near I-5 the morning after a massive all-night manhunt after the deputy's death.
Another video, shown earlier in the trial, showed Diaz being hit in a hail of gunfire after he chasing a Ford Taurus he had tried to pull over at a truck stop near Dunnigan.
The remainder of the interrogation video was to be played this afternoon.
