Davis police have arrested and charged a man with committing a hate crime after he allegedly beat and kicked a woman because of her Russian heritage.
Police say Peter Lloyd Zuniga, 25, of Davis, walked into the Quick Shop Market at 1964 E. Eighth St. about 7:40 a.m. Saturday and asked the clerk for some matches. When the clerk said she didn't have any matches, Zuniga allegedly stole two lighters and left. He came back 10 minutes later, police said, and attacked the clerk, beating and kicking her in the head several times. The clerk, a 45-year-old Davis resident, suffered a broken nose and minor injuries.
Zuniga is in the Yolo County Jail on a $180,000 bail after being arrested on suspicion of robbery, felony assault and committing a hate crime. After his arrest, Zuniga also allegedly threatened to kill specific police officers, so he's also been charged with threatening public officials.
