A charity organization appears to be looking for money at the same time the Placer County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team is seeking donations, causing some confusion among residents, according to authorities.
As part of the Search and Rescue team's annual fundraising efforts, a telemarketing company is calling Placer County residents to ask for donations. At the same time, a group calling itself "Search and Rescue Charities," which has no affiliation with the county's Search and Rescue team, also is calling residents for money, according to a news release from the Placer County Sheriff's Department.
County officials are advising residents that the Search and Rescue Charities group is not raising money for the local Search and Rescue team.
They say that the telemarketers raising money for the county's Search and Rescue team will never ask for credit card information over the phone, and instead will send to donors a pre-addressed envelope that clearly states "Placer County Sheriff's Search and Rescue." According to the news release, the proper addresses for donations are either P.O. Box 4150, Auburn, CA, 95604 or P.O. Box 1710, Tahoe City, CA, 96145.
The "Search and Rescue Charities" group is using an address on Bell Road in Auburn, the news release states.
Donations to the county's Search and Rescue team will be used to purchase equipment for searches involving lost hikers, skiers and anyone else who needs help in Placer County's wilderness areas, the release states.
