Lockdowns at Mesa Verde High School and neighboring Carriage Drive Elementary School in Citrus Heights have been lifted after a search of the campuses and neighborhood failed to turn up anyone with a gun.
Citrus Heights Police Department spokesman Officer Jon Kempf said police received a call at 11:57 a.m. that an individual had been seen on the high school campus with what appeared to be a handgun in a waistband.
Police conducted a safety check of the campuses and neighborhood, but Kempf said no one with a weapon was located.
A spokeswoman at Mesa Verde High School said automated calls were made to parents to notify them of the situation.
Kempf said the lockdowns were lifted about 2:20 p.m.
Automated phone calls were made to parents advising them of the lockdown situation.
The school day typically ends at 2:55 p.m. The spokeswoman said she did not know whether students would be released then.
A police dispatcher said police are on scene but no further information was available.
