A second man has been arrested by the Twin Rivers Police Department in connection with the July 17 burglary and copper theft at the former Harmon Johnson Elementary School.
Ronald Schmidt, 39, of Sacramento was taken into custody Tuesday and booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of burglary, grand theft and felony vandalism.
About 12:10 p.m. July 17, officers responded to the campus at 2591 Edgewater Road in North Sacramento after neighbors reported seeing two people stealing copper wire. Ronnie Scott, 29, was arrested after a brief struggle and fight with officers, but the other suspect fled and officers were unable to find him, according to a Police Department news release.
Through further investigation, detectives identified Schmidt as the other suspect. They contacted him Tuesday at his residence and arrested him on suspicion of the July 17 theft. Detectives found a large amount of stripped copper, along with electrical wiring and tubing, in plain site in Schmidt's garage, officials said. Value of the materials was estimated at more than $20,000.
Police seek the public's help in preventing vandalism, burglaries and thefts that cost schools valuable resources that could be better used to assist children.
