Davis homicide victim's name, cause of death released

The name and cause of death of the Davis strangling victim has been released by Yolo County Chief Deputy Coroner Robert LaBrash.

Kevin Seery, 42, of Davis, died of asphyxia by neck compression and gagging. The death has been determined a homicide.

Lt. Paul Doroshov, public information officer for the Davis Police Department, said police responded to the call on Saturday and found Seery dead on the floor of his bedroom on the 900 block of J Street.

Davis police said the suspect, James Elrod Mings, 36, of Davis, was an acquaintance of Seery.

Mings was arrested at 8:30 p.m. Saturday after placing the emergency call from the College Square Apartments in Davis earlier that day. Another man was with Mings when he placed the call, and he is being considered a witness by police at this time.

Based on evidence at the scene, Doroshov reported, officers began to investigate the case as a homicide.

Doroshov said detectives believe Mings used his hands to kill the victim.
