An 18-year-old Sacramento man is due to appear in court Wednesday, accused of child endangerment after leaving his 5-month-old daughter alone in an unlocked car Friday.
Sacramento Police Department spokesman Sgt. Andrew Pettit said the car was parked in front of a business in the 6000 block of Mack Road about 10 a.m. when a woman parked next to the vehicle a noticed an infant inside, crying.
Police officers and firefighters responded to the woman's 911 call. Pettit said they found the passenger door of the vehicle was unlocked and were able to remove the baby from the car.![]()
"Although it was about 58 degrees outside, it was quite warm inside the car because the sun was shining, and the baby was sweating profusely," Pettit said.
Emergency medical personnel cooled her off and determined that she was otherwise healthy, he said.
A few minute later, the child's father, Christopher Johnson (pictured), returned to the car with a friend. The two had been across the street at a fast-food restaurant, talking to some women, and Johnson told officers he had forgotten the baby was in the car, Pettit said.
Johnson was arrested and remains in Sacramento County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Pettit said the baby was placed in the custody of county Child Protective Services.
