Three men were convicted of first-degree murder today in the drug-related May 5, 2008, shooting death of 35-year-old Jason Fletcher in south Sacramento.
The Sacramento Superior Court jury returned the verdicts against Brandon Theodore Morton, 25, Anthony Arturo Medina, 23, and David Whitehead, 21.
According to the prosecutor's trial brief, Morton had been shorted methamphetamine on a drug deal and had arranged to meet with the woman who made the connection for him to "make it right." Fletcher drove with the woman to the meeting spot on Brookfield Drive at Franklin Boulevard while Medina and Whitehead took a separate car to provide back-up for Morton, the court papers said.
At the meeting spot, Morton shot and killed Fletcher while trying to rob him of his car, the jury found. The panel also affirmed the attempted robbery special circumstance allegation that is likely to result in life prison terms with no chance of parole for the three defendants when they are sentenced Dec. 9 by Judge Michael A. Savage.
The jury also convicted Medina and Whitehead of two counts of attempted murder and gun charges in an unrelated shooting that occurred three days before Fletcher was killed.
