Man arrested on suspicion of domestic violence

A Sacramento man was arrested north of downtown late Sunday morning after his girlfriend called to report domestic violence.

Alonzo Smith, 42, surrendered after police called in hostage negotiators and a SWAT to talk him out of the residence on the 1000 block of Alamos Ave.

The victim reportedly left the house and went to her friend's house down the street to call the police at around 11:20 a.m., saying that her three children, ages 6, 3, and 6 months, were still in the house with the suspect, who was holding what appeared to be handgun.

"She had physical injuries," said Sacramento Police Department Spokesman Sgt. Andrew Pettit. "But she said she didn't think he was going to hurt the kids."

When police were able to draw the man out of the residence, they determined that the supposed handgun was actually a replica gun that is manufactured to look like a real one.

Police have not determined charges in regard to the replica gun, but the man was taken into custody on suspicion of domestic violence.

The children were safely released to their mother.
