A former John F. Kennedy High School student has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in a 1999 attack that resulted in a fellow student's death 11 years later.
Demarcus Lavell Mason, 27, pleaded guilty today in the death of Christopher Thompson. Mason has already served time in prison for the attempted robbery of Thomas, who was injured on Jan. 22, 1999.
During the robbery attempt, Mason assaulted the then 16-year-old Thompson, causing him to fall, hitting his head on a locker, then on a concrete floor.
Thompson sustained serious injuries, and experienced complications from the assault, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney's Office news release. He died Feb. 4, 2010, and the Sacramento County Coroner's Office determined that the cause of death was related to the injury he suffered in the 1999 attack.
Mason was 16 years old at the time of the attack but was tried as an adult in 1999. He pleaded guilty to attempted robbery with an enhancement for great bodily injury and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Mason will be sentenced to 11 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, according to the District Attorney's Office. His sentencing is set for Nov. 18 before Superior Court Judge Kevin McCormick.
