The Sacramento Police Department confirmed tonight that the suspect in the Twin Rivers police shooting case died while in custody Saturday night.
Tyrone Smith, 32, was suspected of shooting an 18-month officer multiple times during a chase in the north area Saturday afternoon. He was arrested at 11:10 p.m. Saturday, police said.
After surgeries, the wounded officer was in stable condition Sunday and expected to recover.
On Sunday night, city police held a news conference to say Smith became unresponsive at 11:33 p.m.while city police officers were transporting him to police headquarters.
Officers stopped at Franklin Boulevard and Fruitridge Road to administer CPR. The Sacramento Fire Department responded and took the suspect to UC Davis Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police said they had wrestled with the suspect when they captured him, but he showed no signs of injuries before being transported.
City police said their " preliminary investigation shows no indication that the suspect's death was the result of police actions."
According to the department's news release, the case is being investigated by SPD's Homicide, Internal Affairs, Professional Standards, and Crime Scene Investigations units. Also looking into the case are the City's Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.
