A Sacramento woman has been arrested on suspicion of torturing a 12-year-old girl.
Duewa Abeana Lee (left), 35, was booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of torture with intent to cause cruel or extreme pain and endangering the life or health of a child. Her bail was set at $1 million.
A Sacramento County Sheriff's department spokesman could not comment on how the girl received her injuries but did note that she had significant internal and external injury. A document describing the arrest said the girl had been abused with a heated clothing iron, a metal spatula heated on the stove and a stapler.
The injuries are alleged to have occurred over a three-month period.
The girl's story came to light last Friday when the was taken to a South Sacramento Department of Motor Vehicles office by Lee, her caregiver. When Lee was not in sight, the girl told a stranger at the DMV that she had suffered on-going abuse. The female stranger approached a DMV clerk who called law enforcement.
When deputies arrived, Lee was gone, but the girl remained. The girl received medical treatment and then was placed in protective custody.
The case was sent to the detective bureau. Detectives developed enough evidence to arrest Lee on Wednesday.
