Investigators have determined that the wounding of a man at Folsom Lake last month was self-inflicted.
Mike Doyle, 53, of Loomis on Sept. 21 called 911 on his cellphone to report he had been shot while loading his kayak onto his vehicle after a day on the lake. He drove himself to the park entrance and awaited paramedics.
Placer County Sheriff's deputies, State Park Peace Officers and Placer County Fire District employees responded to the scene to find Doyle suffering from a back wound. He was transported to Sutter Roseville Hospital.
Officers found evidence that lead them to believe the gunshot wound may have been self-inflicted, according to a press release. Park officials kept the park closed while they tried to pinpoint the origin of the shooting.
The day after the shooting, the spot of the shooting was identified and a weapon recovered.
More investigation and analysis of evidence led officers to determine that the shooting was intentionally self-inflicted. After removal from hospital intensive care, Doyle was questioned by investigators.
At that time he admitted to shooting himself, the press release said.
State Parks officials plan to forward their report to the Placer County District Attorney's office to determine if Doyle should be charged with a crime.
