A 17-year-old boy from Meadow Vista has been arrested following a fatal crash near Applegate in Placer County on Thursday night.
The crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. The teenager was driving a 1997 Subaru Outback on Applegate Road north of Boole Road when he failed to negotiate a curve and hit a tree, fatally injuring three of his four passengers, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
Lukas Warren, 21, and Daniel Silverman, 31, both of Meadow Vista, were pronounced dead at the scene. A 21-year-old man from Auburn was ejected from the vehicle and was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries. His name has not been released pending notification of family members.
The CHP reported that Silverman and the Auburn man were riding in the back seat and neither was wearing a seat belt.
A 17-year-old girl form Eugene, Ore., who also was in the back seat and was not wearing a seat belt, sustained moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
The driver, who suffered minor injuries, was treated Mercy San Juan Medical Center. He was then booked into Placer County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The CHP said it appeared that alcohol and/or drugs played a major role in the crash, and the lack of seat belts contributed to the fatal injuries.
