The CHP needs help identifying a mystery man who cannot speak because of major injuries suffered when he was hit by car on Monday.
The red-haired man was walking from the east side of Watt Avenue near American River Drive about 11 p.m. Monday when he was struck by a car traveling at about 45 mph. The driver, who was not injured, was not at fault, authorities say.
The man walked directly into the path of the car and was thrown onto the windshield, before falling to the ground. He was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center with skull fractures, broken legs and brain swelling.
He is not able to speak and carried no identification.
"I just called UC Davis, and there has not been anyone calling for him," said CHP officer Lizz Dutton.
The Califorina Highway Patrol is asking for the public's help identifying the injured man. He is described as a white, in his early thirties, with shoulder-length red hair and freckles.
He was wearing a tan jacket, black sweats and a newer pair of blue Vans brand shoes.
Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at (916) 338-6710 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or after hours at (916) 861-1300.
