Firefighting skills will be tested in Sunday competition

Local, state and overseas firefighters will participate in a training session/demonstration Sunday in Citrus Heights, a precursor to an international competition.

The session, open to the public, is set for 10 a.m. at Fire Station 21 at 7641 Greenback Lane. It is expected to last two hours.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Battalion Chief Walt White, firefighters from the Hayward Fire Department and members of the New Zealand Fire Service are preparing for the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge championships to be held Nov. 18 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Called by organizers "the toughest two minutes in sports," firefighters race against each other and the clock in a series of physical challenges typically encountered by firefighters on the job.

Competition events include a stair climb in full gear, a hose hoist, a simulated forcible entry, hose advance, and a victim rescue.

The international competition is sponsored by Monroe, N.C.-based Scott Safety.
