A 91-year-old Grass Valley man died this morning in a collision on Grass Valley Highway near Auburn.
The collision occurred about 11:40 a.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, a black Lincoln LS 4D sedan driven by a 47-year-old Auburn woman was in the center two-way left-turn lane, southbound on Grass Valley Highway north of Locksley Lane, intending to turn left into a driveway. At the same time, a red Fiat convertible driven by an 80-year-old Grass Valley woman was traveling northbound on Grass Valley Highway north of Locksley Lane.
The Fiat was traveling about 45 mph in the right lane approaching the Lincoln, when the Lincoln turned directly in front of the Fiat, according to a CHP news release.
The front of the Fiat collided with the right side of the Lincoln.
Officials said the driver of the Fiat suffered major injuries and was transported by ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. The 91-year-old man, a passenger in the front seat of the Fiat, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of family.
The driver of the Lincoln was not injured.
The collision remains under investigation.
