The young woman found dead in her Foothill Farms apartment this morning had suffered a violent assault, authorities said.
Sacramento County sheriff's spokesman Deputy Jason Ramos declined to discuss the injuries that likely killed her, saying only that her body showed "extensive trauma."
"She's clearly been the victim of a violent crime," Ramos said.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was found about 10 a.m. by her mother and her mother's boyfriend, Ramos said.
The couple had stopped by the woman's Andrea Boulevard apartment over the weekend because they had not heard from her in awhile, Ramos said. They did not get a response at her door, but were not concerned because they did not see her car and assumed she was out, he said.
When they did not hear from her after that, the couple returned to the apartment this morning and found her door unlocked. They went inside and found her body. A complex manager called deputies shortly thereafter.
Ramos said detectives are not sure how long ago she was killed, and said it's possible she was inside the apartment when her mother visited over the weekend. The couple did not try to open the door during that visit, he said.
Detectives are interviewing her family about her personal relationships to determine whether that information will provide any investigative leads, Ramos said. They also are trying to find out who last talked to her and when.
In addition, they are searching for the woman's car, which was not found at the complex this morning, Ramos said. However, no information about that car was immediately available.
The woman, described as being in her early 20s, had moved into the Emerald Oaks apartments recently, Ramos said. She lived there alone.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at (916) 874-5115 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-4357.
