Sacramento County Undersheriff Mark Iwasa will be the next police chief at California State University, Sacramento, officials announced today.
Iwasa, 49, will retire from his current post at the end of December and will assume his new role Jan. 3, officials said.
In 1990, Iwasa earned a bachelor of arts in economics with a minor in criminal justice from Sacramento State University. He returned to earn a master's in public policy and administration in 1993. He has 27 years of experience with the Sheriff's Department.
Iwasa replaces interim Chief Ken Barnett, who has been leading the department since former Chief Dan Davis retired in November. His new annual salary will be $144,000, campus officials said.
Sheriff's Capt. Rick Book, who heads the North Division, will become undersheriff, said sheriff's spokesman Deputy Jason Ramos. Book, 48, has 27 years of experience with the Sheriff's Department.
