A state prison investigation team is looking into the cause of the Wednesday riot at New Folsom Prison.
Correctional officers used pepper spray, rubber projectiles and fired 7 rifle rounds to quell the melee involving 150 maximum-security inmates about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Prison officials at California State Prison-Sacramento near Folsom say that two investigation teams are looking into the riot. An investigative services unit is looking into the cause of the riot and a deadly force investigation team is looking at the use of potentially lethal rounds officers fired in an effort to halt the disturbance.
No inmates were critically injured or killed in the riot. Eleven inmates were transported to Sacramento-area hospitals. Nine were treated for minor injuries and released.
Two remained in the hospital Thursday in stable condition. One was being treated to a gunshot wound to his leg. The other inmate had facial injuries and possibly a broken shoulder, both injuries not caused by gunfire.
No prison staff were injured, according to a prison system press release. More than 400 staff members responded to quell the riot.
When the disturbance was over, 5 inmate-made weapons were found. Today, the prison's C-Facility, where maximum-security inmates are housed, was placed on a "modified program pending further investigation."
New Folsom houses 2,800 inmates, primarily maximum-security prisoners serving long sentences and those who have been difficult to manage at other institutions.
