A 53-year-old man who got into a car with his wife around midnight this morning was fatally shot on Interstate 80 after being surprised by assailants hiding in the back seat, Sacramento Police reported.
About midnight this morning, the man and woman got into their car, which was parked in a residential area at Torland Street south of San Juan Road in the north area.
When the woman entered the driver's seat and her husband sat down in the passenger seat, neither knew of the two assailants hiding in back, Sacramento Police spokeswoman Officer Laura Peck said today.
It was not immediately clear at what point the car's owners realized there were people in the back. But a short time later, with the car traveling east on the freeway, an altercation occurred.
One of the assailants shot the husband in the upper body, inflicting a fatal injury, Peck said.
The car was stopped at I-80 and Norwood Avenue. The suspects fled the scene.
Police arriving at the scene found the husband, who was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, Peck said. His identity has not been released.
The Sacramento Police Department's Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Investigations Unit are investigating the homicide, Peck said.
They have yet to identify the suspects or a motive, she said. But at least one of the two suspects is male. She said the details of what occurred inside the car are still under investigation.
