During the first six days of a winter holiday crackdown on motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, no DUI fatalities have been reported in Sacramento or Placer counties.
From 12:01 a.m. Friday through midnight Wednesday, officers representing 17 law enforcement agencies in Sacramento County arrested 112 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to a news release from the California Office of Traffic Safety's DUI enforcement campaign. In 2010, 157 DUI arrests occurred in the county during the same six-day period.
In Placer County, officers representing seven law enforcement agencies arrested 24 individuals for DUI offenses Friday through Wednesday, compared with 27 such arrests during the same six-day period last year.
During the Christmas weekend, the second weekend of the 17-day campaign, DUI checkpoints will be conducted in Sacramento, and DUI saturation patrols are planned in the cities of Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Galt and Isleton. In Placer County, a DUI checkpoint will be conducted in Auburn, and extra local DUI saturation patrols will be deployed throughout the county.
Also during the holiday weekend, the California Highway Patrol will deploy all available officers during its maximum enforcement period, 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Monday.
All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus on stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts.
Law enforcement agencies urge motorists to report suspected drunken drivers by calling 911.
