A Placerville man died in the hospital Sunday after his stepson allegedly shot him in the head.

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies received a report of a shooting in the 3000 block of Deer Canyon Road in Placerville just after 8 a.m. Sunday.

When they arrived at the house, they found John Gale Malia Jr., 69, of Placerville on the floor with a gunshot wound to his head. He was still alive, but later died at a local hospital.

Officers searched several trailers and outbuildings in the area for the suspect, who they believe had also shot himself. The suspect appeared and surrendered. The man, identified only as Malia's stepson, was transported to Marshall Hospital in Placerville for treatment of a head injury, according to reports.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the shooting is a result of an on-going disagreement between the suspect and Malia, who live together on the property.
