Upscale neighborhoods in the Granite Bay area are being warned about nighttime kick-door burglars who have hit 33 homes since August.
The burglars approach the front of darkened homes and kick the front door. If it appears nobody is home, they then kick in the door or a window.
Once inside, they take money or small items such as jewelry. Lt. Mark Reed of the Placer County Sheriff's Department said in one recent incident, the burglars kicked at the door, not knowing if the resident was home.
The burglars went no further in attempting to enter the residence when the criminals realized that somebody was home. Reed said the homeowner was not able to get a good description of the intruders or their vehicle.
That also has been the case in the other incidents. Reed said the department is urging residents to leave lights on when they are not home and to set burglar alarms.
Reed advised calling 911 if a burglary is in progress. Call the department if a suspicious person or vehicle is spotted: (530) 889-7800.
"We have people to respond," said Reed. "We need everybody's eyes and ears. We would much rather come out. That's what we get paid to do, to check it out."
