Arraignment set on suspect in park superintendent's slaying

An arraignment has been scheduled for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. on the suspect who was arrested in the Monday morning shooting death of Cordova Recreation and Park District superintendent Steve Ebert.

The suspect, Dupree Pierre Barber, 47, will appear in Sacramento Superior Court in front of Judge Lawrence G. Brown.

No complaint had been filed as of late this morning, according to the court system's online records.

Barber turned himself in Tuesday in West Sacramento and Sacramento sheriff's detectives booked him into the downtown jail on suspicion of murder in the shooting death of the 59-year-old Ebert.

Detectives said Ebert was gunned down at 6 a.m. Monday at Hagan Community Park in Rancho Cordova. Harper is a former employee of the park district who had recently been laid off as part of an $800,000 cost-cutting measure, according to the district's interim administrator.
