A 21-year-old man was arrested this morning for suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after he allegedly caused a head-on crash in Folsom on Saturday evening, killing two people, Sacramento Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jason Browning said.
Browning said Michael Sharp of Folsom was arrested also for investigation of drug-impaired driving causing serious injury or death in connection with the crash, which occurred about 6:45 p.m.
Browning said Sharp was driving a sports utility vehicle south on Folsom Boulevard when his vehicle crossed the center line into the northbound lane, hitting a Saturn head-on near Parkshore Drive.
The Saturn driver was trapped in the car. Emergency personnel declared both the driver and a front-seat passenger dead at the scene. The victims' identities were not immediately available from the Sacramento County Coroner's office.
A second passenger in the Saturn was also taken to a local hospital with what were described as non-lethal injuries.
Sharp was hospitalized due to his injuries and was not booked into the Sacramento County Jail.
A third vehicle, a mini-van, struck the Saturn from behind after the initial collision. The driver of the van did not require immediate medical treatment, authorities said.
The Folsom Police Department is expected to reveal the type of intoxicant suspected in the case after district attorney's investigators complete toxicological tests.
