A tolling of a bell in memory of gun violence victims on the one-year-anniversary of the shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will be held Sunday in downtown Sacramento.
The gathering Sunday evening is to mark the killing of six citizens and wounding of 13 others, including Giffords, in Tucson last year. Anyone who attends the Sacramento gathering is welcome to say the name of a victim of gun violence.
State Sen. Darrell Steinberg and Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, both of Sacramento, are scheduled to make brief remarks after the tolling of the bells and reciting of names. Organizations coming together for the gathering say that they want to send a message that too many victims are lost to gun violence.
"Enough is enough," stated a press release announcing the bell tolling.
The hour-long ceremony begins at 5 p.m. on the steps of St. John's Lutheran Church, 1701 L St. The bell tolling and program will be followed by a short memorial procession.
A candlelight vigil will be held at the corner of 15th and L streets.
The California Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence are coordinating the vigils being planned in California, including those in Compton, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica and Walnut Creek.
In Tucson, planned events include a community-wide ringing of bells at churches at 10:11 a.m., the exact time the shooting broke out, according to reports.
